The Danger of Flies
Along with fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, flies are another nuisance during the warm months. Fly species such as stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and black flies (Simuliidae) are known to attack and bite exposed areas of dogs that are not protected by fur. The tips of the ears and ear folds are usually the targets. These flies feed on the blood released through the bite wounds. Flies repeatedly attack the area which causes bleeding, swelling and severe crusting. If left unattended, the area becomes infected.
Examine your dog for open sores or bleeding, raised bumps with scabs around any areas that are not protected by fur. If you suspect fly bite wounds on your dog, have your veterinarian examine your dog for treatment to prevent secondary infections. Ask your veterinarian about the best fly repellent ointment or product for your dog.
